In December 2008 Greyhound Support Transport was established for the purpose of transporting retired racing greyhounds from race tracks and greyhound breeding farms in Florida to non-racing states and Canada so they can be adopted into pet homes. We do not handle adoptions, but assist in greyhound adoptions by moving the greyhounds from the race tracks and breeding farms to adoption groups.
We are incorporated in the State of Florida as a non-profit corporation and are based in Miami, Florida. We are staffed totally by volunteers, and 100% of all funds raised go directly to help the greyhounds.
We have established contacts with adoption groups in several states and Canada who receive the greyhounds that we transport from Florida. We are constantly adding new adoption partners so that we may help even more dogs in the future. The biggest obstacle we face in getting these greyhounds to adoption groups in other states is the transportation costs. We ask the racing kennel owners for financial assistance in transporting their greyhounds for adoption. While some kennels are able to pay for transporting their dogs, others cannot afford to help us.
Some of the trips can be quite expensive. For example, the cost of moving one greyhound from Florida to Canada or Oregon is approximately $200. We can currently move a greyhound from Florida to the Northeast for about $100 per dog. It is quite a challenge to find ways to pay for the trips, but we realize the importance of what we are doing, and we work very hard to raise money to help the greyhounds.
You can help tremendously by sending a contribution to help with our efforts. No donation is too small. Please see our “How You Can Help” section for information on how you can sponsor a greyhound’s transportation to their new home. We are also in need of volunteers to help with our work. We hope you will consider helping us to help the greyhounds.
OUR MISSION: For many years, Florida has been known as the “Mecca” of greyhound racing. There are currently 13 greyhound tracks operating in Florida, which is almost as many as all other states combined. Each track houses up to 2,000 greyhounds at any one time, and dogs are constantly grading off or retiring due to injury. There are also many greyhound breeding farms in Florida. Approximately one in four greyhounds never qualifies to race and these dogs are available at a very young age (16 months to two years). This means that there are hundreds of greyhounds in Florida in need of finding good homes. Even with the dedicated work of all of the greyhound adoption groups in Florida, there are still not enough pet homes to take in all the greyhounds that must be moved from the tracks and farms each year.
Because we realize that the best option for these dogs is to move them where they have a better chance of being adopted, Greyhound Support Transport (GST) was organized. We assist with moving as many retired racers as possible to non-racing states and Canada. Since there are no operating greyhound tracks in these areas, greyhounds available for adoption are in short supply, and often potential adopters must wait several months or longer to receive their greyhounds. Meanwhile, Florida greyhounds must wait up to two years in their kennels before being placed for adoption. At GST, we are dedicated to doing everything possible to reduce this wait time and allow these dogs to have a good life as a pet as soon as possible after their racing career ends.
We are incorporated in the State of Florida as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation and are based in Miami, Florida.
